India Aims for Self-Reliance in Mining, Critical Minerals: G Kishan Reddy

Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy today underlined the government's vision of building a self-reliant India while accelerating the pace of development in Jharkhand.

Addressing the media at Hotel Radisson Blu in Ranchi, Reddy said, "India is steadily progressing towards achieving self-reliance across sectors, with a special emphasis on mining and critical minerals."

Highlighting the government's commitment to youth employment, the minister said, "Multiple schemes have been launched to create opportunities and strengthen the country's workforce. Government initiatives in mining, skill development, and welfare schemes are designed to uplift marginalised communities while creating large-scale employment."

Adding further, he said, "Efforts are underway to significantly enhance the country's domestic coal production capacity, with Odisha and Chhattisgarh currently leading in output. At the same time, India is emerging as a global leader in the field of critical minerals, which play a vital role in strengthening the nation's industrial and economic base."

Speaking on coal workers' welfare, Reddy announced that from September 17, observed as Labour Day, Coal India employees will adhere to a mandatory dress code. He also declared that coal workers will now be provided insurance coverage of Rs 1 crore, ensuring greater social security.

Reflecting on the sector's transformation, the minister said, "Before 2015, the coal industry was in poor condition. Today, India is rapidly advancing towards becoming the world's third-largest economy, with coal and mineral resources playing a crucial role in this journey."
