India-UK Relations Energized by Historic Trade Deal and Strategic Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described a “new energy” in India-UK relations following his recent high-level discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer is on his first official visit to India since becoming the UK Prime Minister, and the two leaders met in Mumbai to focus on deepening cooperation in trade, technology, and strategic ties.
During their talks, Modi highlighted the progress made under Starmer’s leadership, pointing to the landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) signed between the two countries in July 2024. The agreement was signed during Modi’s visit to the UK and represents a significant step toward strengthening the economic partnership between India and Britain.
“This agreement is historic and marks a new chapter in our bilateral relationship,” Modi said in a joint statement alongside Starmer. He emphasized the importance of fast-tracking the implementation of the free trade deal to unlock its full potential.
Prime Minister Starmer echoed this enthusiasm, calling the trade deal “really important” and the biggest agreement the UK has signed since leaving the European Union. He also noted that it’s the largest trade deal India has ever entered into, underscoring its significance for both nations.
The UK-India Free Trade Agreement aims to boost bilateral trade by an estimated £25.5 billion annually. It opens up new opportunities for businesses and investors, reduces tariffs, and encourages collaboration in areas such as technology, innovation, and sustainable development.
Both leaders agreed to continue working closely to ensure the swift and effective implementation of the agreement. Their discussions also covered expanding cooperation in other sectors, including science and technology, defense, and climate change initiatives.
Starmer’s visit to India, particularly his meeting with Modi in Mumbai, signals a strengthened partnership at a time when both countries are seeking to enhance economic growth and geopolitical collaboration.
This renewed momentum in India-UK ties reflects a shared vision for increased trade, stronger strategic alliances, and deeper people-to-people connections—setting the stage for a dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship in the years ahead.
