Indian Mountaineer Dies While Descending Mount Everest; Efforts Underway to Retrieve Body

In a tragic incident on Mount Everest, a 45-year-old Indian climber, Subrata Ghosh from West Bengal, lost his life while descending from the summit of the world’s highest peak. According to The Himalayan Times, Ghosh is the second foreign national to die on Everest this climbing season.
Ghosh was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar–Snowy Everest Expedition 2025 and had successfully reached the 8,848.86-metre summit on Saturday. However, his summit push was delayed, and he reached the top around 2 pm with his guide. On the way down, he reportedly showed signs of severe exhaustion and altitude sickness.
According to Bodhraj Bhandari, Managing Director of Snowy Horizon Treks, Ghosh collapsed just below the Hillary Step—one of the final technical challenges before the summit. His guide, Champal Tamang, said Ghosh eventually refused to move during the descent. Champal returned to Camp IV late that night and reported the incident the next morning.
Efforts are currently underway to retrieve Ghosh’s body and bring it back to base camp.
Earlier this week, 45-year-old Filipino climber Philipp II Santiago also died while preparing for his summit attempt on May 14. Despite the tragedies, this climbing season has seen over 50 successful summits so far, with more than 450 climbers receiving permits to scale Everest.
