Indore Named India’s Cleanest City for 8th Consecutive Year

Indore has once again cemented its reputation as India’s cleanest city, this time taking the top spot in the newly introduced “Super Swachh League Cities” category, as announced by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday during the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards ceremony.

Indore also ranked first in the category of cities with over one million population, followed by Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada.

The “Super League” is a new elite category introduced to recognize cities that have consistently performed well in previous years. Indore’s win marks yet another milestone, having previously been declared the country’s cleanest city for a record seven consecutive times, including a joint first-place finish with Surat earlier this year.

In other population categories, Noida was named the cleanest city in the 3–10 lakh population range, while New Delhi Municipal Council topped the 50,000–3 lakh category. Vita in Maharashtra and Panchgani were ranked highest in the 20,000–50,000 and under 20,000 population categories, respectively.

The Swachh Survekshan awards, held annually since 2016, are part of the Centre’s Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban and are organised by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The survey is billed as the world’s largest urban cleanliness and sanitation assessment.

This year’s survey was the most extensive to date, covering over 4,500 cities — a significant increase from just 73 urban local bodies in the inaugural 2016 edition. According to officials, more than 3,000 assessors spent 45 days conducting detailed inspections in every ward across the country.

A government release said the awards were based on 10 parameters and 54 indicators, offering a comprehensive look at sanitation and waste management performance in urban areas. Over 11 lakh households were assessed, and around 14 crore citizens were engaged through direct interaction, the Swachhata App, MyGov platform, and social media.

The “Super Swachh League” category was first introduced in September 2024 by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The category includes cities that have ranked in the top three at least once in the last three years and continue to perform in the top 20% of their population category this year.

A total of 78 awards were presented during the event, which was also attended by MoS Tokhan Sahu and MoHUA Secretary Srinivas K.
