IRS Officer Rahul Naveen Appointed as Director of Enforcement Directorate

The Government of India has appointed IRS officer Rahul Naveen as the Director of Enforcement Directorate. He is a 1993-batch IRS officer. He has been working as the acting director of the agency till now. He was made the acting director of ED after the completion of Sanjay Kumar Mishra's tenure on 15 September last year.
Before being appointed as the in-charge director of ED, Rahul Naveen was working with Sanjay Mishra. By working with him, he gained experience in running the agency. A committee headed by Prime Minister Modi has appointed Rahul Naveen as the head of ED.
Rahul Naveen is a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer. He took over as acting director on 15 September 2023 at the end of the tenure of former ED director Sanjay Kumar Mishra. He is known for his better track record within the agency, in whose presence the agency has unearthed many big cases.
The central government issued an ordinance last year, under which the tenure of ED and CBI chiefs can be extended to three years after the stipulated period of two years. Currently, more than 100 political leaders of the country are being investigated by the ED, about 95 percent of whom are from opposition parties.
Sanjay Mishra was appointed as ED director on November 19, 2018, for a term of two years. However, his tenure was extended several times, leading to controversy. The Supreme Court later declared Mishra's third extension illegal. Despite this, the government requested the court to allow Mishra to continue as ED chief till October 2023, but the court approved his extension till September 15.
