Jaishankar warns of ‘three evils,’ highlights Pahalgam terror attack at SCO meeting in China

At a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Tianjin, China, India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar addressed ministers and top officials from China, Pakistan, and other member countries, speaking firmly about the “three evils” of terrorism, separatism, and extremism.

He pointed to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, in April as a stark example of these threats. While he didn’t explicitly name Pakistan, Jaishankar said the attack was “deliberately conducted to undermine the tourism economy of Jammu and Kashmir and sow religious division.”

Jaishankar highlighted that the UN Security Council had condemned the Pahalgam attack “in the strongest terms,” calling for those responsible—the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors—to be held accountable. He added that India has already taken action and will continue to do so.

Following the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror hubs inside Pakistan as part of a strategy to treat terrorists and their backers as one and the same. Jaishankar urged the SCO to stay true to its founding goals by taking a firm stance against such threats.

The SCO is a 10-member Eurasian security and political alliance that includes China, Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.

Earlier that day, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Dar called the relationship between Pakistan and China “iron-clad brothers” and “all-weather strategic cooperative partners,” emphasizing their commitment to deepening friendship and advancing regional goals.
