Kharge Stresses Right to Vote, Flags Threats to Democratic Institutions on National Voters’ Day

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on National Voters’ Day emphasised the importance of the right to vote in shaping India’s future and voiced concern over what he described as efforts to weaken the country’s democratic processes.
In a message shared on social media platform X on Sunday, Kharge said National Voters’ Day serves as a reminder of the power vested in citizens. “National Voters’ Day is a powerful reminder that a nation’s future belongs to its people, and that our collective voice can shape our shared destiny,” he said.
Stressing the need for credible and transparent electoral practices, the Congress chief said citizens are entitled to elections conducted without fear or bias. “The people of India deserve free, fair and fearless elections, where clean electoral rolls and a level playing field are the primary requirements,” he said.
Kharge alleged that democratic values were being eroded through practices that dilute voting rights. Referring to what he termed “Vote Chori” and unplanned Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercises, he said such actions undermine India’s long-cherished democratic traditions.
He also expressed concern over what he described as sustained pressure on constitutional institutions, particularly the Election Commission of India. “In recent times, institutions like the Election Commission of India have faced continuous pressure,” Kharge said, adding that protecting their autonomy is essential. “It is our solemn responsibility to safeguard their independence and integrity so that democracy does not merely survive, but truly thrives.”
National Voters’ Day is observed every year on January 25 to commemorate the foundation of the Election Commission of India and to promote greater participation in the electoral process.
Kharge’s remarks come amid an ongoing political debate over electoral reforms, voter list revisions and the role of independent institutions in maintaining the credibility of India’s democratic framework.
