Leh Tense After Clashes Leave Four Dead

Prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 are in place in Leh as an eerie calm prevailed a day after violent clashes over demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status left four people dead and dozens injured.
The union government has blamed environment activist Sonam Wangchuk, who ended his fast after the violence yesterday, for "provoking" protestors.
Police and Central armed police force personnel have been deployed in strength in Leh to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.
"Since last evening there has been no report of any violence," said an official.
Yesterday clashes in Leh led to 4 deaths, injuries to dozens and damage to BJP office and vehicles.
Wangchuk said the situation took a turn for the worse after the health of his two associates, sitting on a fast, deteriorated on Tuesday and they were hospitalised in a serious condition.
“That triggered anger among people. There was a shutdown in Leh today. Thousands of youth came on streets. Some people think they are our supporters but more than that, although the entire Ladakh supports us, the youth gave vent to their anger,” he had said.
The union government said a mob instigated by provocative speeches of Wangchuk left the venue of the hunger strike and attacked a political party office as well as government office of the CEC Leh.
"They also set these offices on fire, attacked the security personnel, and torched a police vehicle. The unruly mob attacked the police personnel in which more than 30 police/CRPF personnel were injured. The mob continued to destroy the public property and attack the police personnel. In self-defence, police had to resort to firing in which some casualties were reported," the Home Ministry said.
To protest the killings and show solidarity with Leh, Kargil is also observing a shutdown today. The administration has already ordered prohibitory restrictions in the district to maintain law and order.
The police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident.
The Kargil Democratic Alliance, which has spearheaded the demand for special status in Kargil, had issued a shutdown call today in support of the Leh leadership.
