Manipur: Four killed, including top Kuki commander, in suspected factional clash

Four people were killed on Monday afternoon when unidentified armed attackers ambushed a vehicle in K. Mongjang village, located in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. Police believe the attack is linked to ongoing factional rivalry between Kuki militant groups.

According to police, three people traveling in the car died on the spot, and a woman passerby caught in the crossfire later died from her injuries.

Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that among those killed was Thangboi Haokip, also known as Thahpi, the deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuki National Organisation/Kuki National Army (KNO/KNA), a prominent Kuki militant group.

No group has claimed responsibility yet, and authorities have not officially identified the attackers. Meanwhile, police suspect the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), a splinter faction with a history of tension with the KNO/KNA, may be responsible.

According to reports, several empty 5.56 mm bullet casings at the scene were found , suggesting the use of advanced weapons, and noted multiple bullet marks on the vehicle.
