Manipur Governor Calls for Collective Effort Towards Lasting Peace at Police Raising Day Celebration

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday urged all sections of society to come together in the pursuit of lasting peace and harmony in the state, emphasizing that "absence of conflict alone does not ensure peace." His remarks came during the 134th Raising Day celebration of the Manipur Police, held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Bhalla commended the Manipur Police for their unwavering service, especially during the turbulent 2023 violence. He described the force as “pillars of strength in upholding the rule of law” and acknowledged their critical role in maintaining order and protecting citizens during the ongoing unrest.

The Governor inspected the ceremonial parade and took the salute from various contingents, including the Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalions, Civil Police (both male and female units), 9th IR (Mahila) Battalion, Traffic Police, Home Guards, and Village Defence Force.

Highlighting key achievements of the Manipur Police, Bhalla lauded their success in counter-insurgency operations, the crackdown on illegal poppy cultivation, and efforts toward modernization and welfare. He assured continued government support in improving infrastructure, training, and overall welfare of the force.

Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh, speaking at the event, acknowledged the challenges the police have faced during the past two years of conflict. He stated that the force, with support from central agencies, had “risen to the occasion.” Over 1,078 looted weapons have been recovered through surrender or seizures, signaling a step towards restoring normalcy. He also called for public cooperation to sustain peace.

The DGP expressed concern over rising extortion cases, revealing that 1,035 underground cadres involved in such crimes have been arrested. He highlighted the round-the-clock work of the Anti-Extortion Cell and the department’s renewed focus on tackling cybercrime and internal accountability.

During the ceremony, the Governor felicitated Additional SP Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Naorem Roshibina Devi for earning international accolades in sports. Kangpokpi Police Station was awarded the DGP Trophy for Best Police Station 2025, with City Police, Imphal, and Bishnupur District Police following.

The event concluded with an impressive skill demonstration by the Manipur Police Sports Club, showcasing the force’s discipline, dedication, and professionalism.
