Monsoon officially hits Uttar Pradesh; heavy rainfall forecasted

Lucknow: The Southwest Monsoon officially arrived in the southern parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, five days later than usual, according to meteorological officials. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported light to moderate rainfall in districts like Sonbhadra, Ballia, Mau, and Ghazipur.

The weather forecast suggests that favorable conditions over the next two to three days will help the monsoon advance further into more areas of the state.

IMD scientist Atul Kumar Singh explained that a well-defined low-pressure system near Gangetic West Bengal is expected to move west-northwest in the coming days. This system will bring heavier rains, widespread thunderstorms, and lightning to Uttar Pradesh starting June 19.

Singh also warned of the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall between June 19 and June 22 in many parts of the state.

The monsoon is expected to cover the entire state by June 30. It is also progressing into other regions, including parts of the northern Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.

The arrival of the monsoon brought some much-needed relief on Wednesday from the scorching heat, with temperatures in many areas having hovered above 40 degrees Celsius earlier.

Meanwhile, the state government has urged people to stay cautious, as monsoon season often leads to more frequent and intense lightning strikes. The meteorological department has also warned that heavy rain and lightning could damage weak buildings, such as old houses and huts.

District officials have been advised to prepare and stay alert in response to the forecast, according to relief department sources.
