Just 20 days before the start of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, a major political upheaval has occurred in the state. Senior Congress leader and sitting MP from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, March 18. In the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia, Bordoloi formally joined the saffron party. Indian News Portal
After joining the BJP, Pradyut Bordoloi explained the reason for his resignation. He said, "Getting a ticket wasn't a matter of life and death for me. The most important thing for me was to live with my head held high. Congress has given me a lot, but let me be clear: I am in my second term in the Lok Sabha and still have three years left. If I had wanted to remain an MP, I could have endured the humiliation, but I decided to work and leave the party."
On this occasion, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Current Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi has joined the BJP. His history with the Congress dates back to 1975; his joining will further strengthen the BJP. We all welcome him. The Assam BJP will recommend to the central leadership that he contest the upcoming assembly elections."
The Chief Minister further sarcastically said that anyone with self-respect no longer has any reason to remain in the Congress. Our goal is to bring as many Congress leaders as possible into the BJP.
Pradyut Bordoloi's resignation from the Congress is being considered a major blow to the opposition party. Bordoloi had been associated with the Congress party since 1975 and was considered one of the most experienced leaders in the state. After resigning from the Congress on Tuesday, he joined the party at the BJP headquarters on Wednesday.
