Nitish Kumar Set to Take Rajya Sabha Oath on April 10, Fuels Speculation of Bihar CM Change

Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) national president Nitish Kumar is set to be sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10, 2026, according to reports, triggering strong speculation about a leadership change in the state.

Sources indicate that Kumar will leave for Delhi on April 9 ahead of the oath-taking ceremony. His transition to the Upper House has intensified discussions in political circles about the possibility of a new Chief Minister in Bihar. It is being speculated that a new government formation could take place after April 14, following the end of Kharmas.

Amid these developments, the Bihar Home Department has clarified that Nitish Kumar will continue to receive ‘Z Plus’ category security even if he steps down as Chief Minister. The decision was taken after a review under the Bihar Special Security Act, 2000, with instructions issued to the Director General of Police and Special Branch to ensure uninterrupted high-level protection.

‘Z Plus’ security is among the highest levels of protection in India, typically provided to top political leaders. It involves a multi-layered security arrangement with around 55 personnel, including personal security officers, armed guards and escort vehicles, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance.

Nitish Kumar had earlier resigned from his membership of the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30 after being elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. While constitutional provisions allow a Chief Minister to remain in office for up to six months without being a member of the state legislature, indications suggest that Kumar may soon hand over the leadership to a successor.

Political observers believe that discussions between the JD(U) and its alliance partners are ongoing regarding the next Chief Minister. The developments are being seen as a significant transition in Bihar politics, with the focus now shifting to who will take over the leadership in the state.

All eyes are on the political scenario after April 14, as the state prepares for a potential reshuffle and a new phase in governance.
