Nitish Kumar Takes Rajya Sabha Oath, Signals Exit from Bihar Politics After Two Decades

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday took oath as a Rajya Sabha member, marking a significant political transition after nearly two decades at the helm of the state.

He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan at Parliament House. With his entry into the Upper House, Nitish Kumar has indicated his shift from state politics to a more active role in Delhi.

Speaking to reporters, Kumar said he would resign as Chief Minister within the next three to four days, adding that he had accomplished his key objectives in Bihar and would now focus on national-level responsibilities.

The development has intensified speculation over the next Chief Minister of Bihar. Sources indicate that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) may finalise a new leader on April 14. Kumar had earlier resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30 after winning the Rajya Sabha election held on March 16.

He also hinted at broader changes in governance, stating that along with a new Chief Minister, fresh faces could be inducted into the cabinet to carry forward the state’s development agenda.

Nitish Kumar, the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, first assumed office in 2005 and has remained a central figure in the state’s political landscape. His career began as an MLA in 1985, followed by key roles as a Union Minister during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

With his likely exit, the focus has now shifted to the NDA leadership, where discussions are underway between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (United) over succession.

The transition is being seen as a pivotal moment in Bihar politics, with the alliance facing the challenge of maintaining stability and continuity in the post-Nitish Kumar era.
