One Month in Jail: No Family Visits for Sonam Raghuvanshi, Accused of Murdering Husband in Meghalaya

Sonam Raghuvanshi, who has been accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, has now spent a month behind bars in Shillong Jail, Meghalaya. According to a report by NDTV, not a single family member has visited her during this time, despite prison rules allowing such meetings.

Sources say Sonam is under constant CCTV surveillance. She’s only the second woman in the jail currently facing murder charges. Out of the jail’s 496 inmates, just 20 are women.

Interestingly, despite the gravity of the allegations against her, Sonam has reportedly shown no signs of remorse. She’s adapted quickly to life in prison and seems to have built a rapport with her fellow female inmates. However, she has remained tight-lipped about her personal life and the crime she's accused of — both with other inmates and jail staff.

Currently, Sonam stays near the jail warden’s office, sharing her space with two under-trial women prisoners. She strictly follows the prison routine, waking up at the designated time each day. While she hasn’t been assigned any formal work yet, prison authorities plan to involve her in skill development activities like sewing. She’s also allowed to watch TV daily.

While it may appear that Sonam is completely cut off from her family, Raja Raghuvanshi’s relatives claim otherwise. According to them, Sonam’s family has spoken to her at least four times since she was incarcerated.

Raja’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, has accused Sonam’s brother, Govind, of pretending to sympathize with their family while secretly staying in touch with Sonam. “They’ve been in contact for the past four weeks. Her entire family is involved — they’ve hired a lawyer and are working hard to get her out on bail,” Vipin alleged in a statement to Amar Ujala.

Govind had earlier publicly condemned his sister’s actions, even expressing support for Raja’s family and calling for the harshest punishment if Sonam is found guilty. “If she’s guilty, she should get the death penalty,” he had said.
