PM Modi Expresses Grief Over Tragic Karur Rally Incident That Left 10 Dead, Dozens Injured

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, where a sudden crowd surge led to the deaths of at least 10 people and left more than 30 others injured.

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,” the Prime Minister posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday night.

The tragedy unfolded during a massive campaign event held by Vijay’s newly formed political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), as part of its state-wide “Velicham Veliyeru” (‘Let There Be Light’) tour. The rally was held at Velusamypuram, along the Karur–Erode highway, and drew a crowd estimated at over 60,000 — double the expected number.

Chaos erupted around 7:45 pm when enthusiastic supporters surged towards the stage as Vijay began speaking. The suffocating crowd led to a stampede-like situation, with multiple people fainting and children getting separated from their families. Volunteers and police struggled to control the panic, and several people were trampled in the crush.

Vijay, visibly shocked, paused his speech and was seen distributing water bottles and calling for help. Live footage showed him trying to calm the crowd and locate a missing child amid the confusion. Emergency services had difficulty accessing the venue due to congestion, with volunteers forming human chains to clear pathways for ambulances.

Officials confirmed that 10 people had died, with the toll likely to rise. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered. The Tamil Nadu government is reportedly considering a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

The incident has drawn widespread political reactions. While opposition leaders blamed poor planning and crowd control, TVK expressed sorrow, stating they had followed all safety protocols. The tragedy casts a dark shadow over what was meant to be a major milestone in Vijay’s political journey.
