PM Modi Inaugurates ₹4,000-Crore Nature-Themed Terminal at Guwahati Airport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, the capital of Assam, on Saturday, December 20. Built at a cost of approximately ₹4,000 crore, this terminal is India's first nature-themed airport terminal, specifically designed to reflect the culture and nature of Northeast India.
Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi personally toured the new terminal and inspected its facilities. An 80-foot-tall statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam after whom the airport is named, was also unveiled on the airport premises.
Annual Passenger Capacity
The new terminal is expected to have an annual passenger capacity of over 13 million, making it the largest airport terminal in Northeast India. According to officials, the total cost of the entire project is approximately ₹5,000 crore, of which ₹1,000 crore has been earmarked for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities.
Gateway to Northeast and Southeast Asia
Officials say the airport will not only serve as a major aviation hub for Northeast India but also a key gateway to Southeast Asia. This is expected to significantly boost trade, tourism, and connectivity in the region.
Distinctive design adorned with bamboo and orchids
The new terminal was developed by Adani Airports Holdings Limited. Its design utilizes bamboo and orchid-based patterns, reflecting the cultural identity of Assam and the Northeast. The project was completed in coordination with the central and state governments.
Road connectivity also in focus
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma approved ₹116.2 crore for the expansion of roads leading to the terminal and reviewed the project's facilities.
PM Modi's Message
A day before the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi shared a glimpse of the new terminal on the social media platform X, calling it a "major boost to Assam's infrastructure." He said the increased capacity would improve living standards and boost trade and tourism.
