Chhattisgarh is poised to witness a defining moment in its democratic journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the State’s newly built Legislative Assembly complex in Raipur tomorrow, marking a milestone in the State’s Silver Jubilee year.

Rising from the heart of central India, the new Assembly building represents far more than an architectural achievement. It stands as a living embodiment of Chhattisgarh’s cultural pride, resilience and evolution since its formation in 2000. Twenty-five years after the State held its first legislative session at Raipur’s historic Rajkumar College, Chhattisgarh now enters a new era with a permanent and world class home for its democracy.

The building, constructed over 51 acres at a cost of Rs 324 crore, harmoniously fuses tradition and modernity. The design celebrates Chhattisgarh’s identity as India’s “Rice Bowl”, with the ceiling of the main chamber adorned with intricately carved motifs of paddy stalks and leaves, reflecting the State’s deep agrarian roots. The doors, furniture and interior fittings have been crafted by the master wood artisans of Bastar, infusing indigenous craftsmanship into a contemporary legislative space.

Divided into three principal wings—A, B, and C, the complex has been meticulously planned for functionality and aesthetic coherence. Wing A houses the Assembly Secretariat while Wing B includes the main chamber, the Central Hall and offices for the Chief Minister and Speaker. Wing C accommodates ministerial and committee offices. Designed with foresight, the main chamber can be expanded to seat up to 200 members, ensuring that the structure remains relevant for decades to come.

The new Assembly is also a testament to technological foresight and environmental responsibility. It has been equipped with a fully digital infrastructure to enable paperless legislative proceedings, making Chhattisgarh one of India’s emerging “smart assemblies.” Legislators will now be able to access bills, debates, and documents electronically, marking a step toward transparency and efficiency in governance.

In keeping with the principles of green architecture, the building integrates solar power installations, dual rainwater-harvesting lakes and the use of sustainable materials throughout its construction. Each phase adheres strictly to national energy-efficiency standards, positioning the complex as a model for environmentally conscious governance infrastructure.

Among its other features, the Assembly complex includes a state-of-the-art auditorium with a capacity of 500 people and a 100-seat Central Hall designed for deliberation, reflection and public dialogue. The architecture balances modern geometry with traditional symbolism, evoking both progress and rootedness in equal measure.

Beyond its structural grandeur, the new Assembly is a monument to the aspirations of over three crore citizens of Chhattisgarh. Adorned with motifs that echo the State’s artistic and cultural traditions, it symbolizes the collective journey of a people who have balanced development with dignity, and progress with pride.
