Punjab to Rebuild 44,920 km of Roads as Mann Govt Launches ₹16,000-Crore Infrastructure Drive

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday outlined an ambitious statewide road infrastructure programme while simultaneously hardening his tone against criminal networks.

Speaking at a press briefing in Chandigarh, he said the state is set to rebuild and upgrade 44,920 kilometres of roadways, marking one of the largest such initiatives in Punjab’s recent history.

According to the Chief Minister, the plan includes works by the Punjab Mandi Board, PWD, urban local bodies and panchayats, supported by a combined outlay exceeding Rs16,000 crore.

Mann stressed that the administration would ensure strict quality control, noting that flying squads have been deployed and contracts will be cancelled immediately if flaws are detected.

Responding to political criticism over gang-related incidents, Mann delivered a sharp warning to criminal groups, asserting that the government will respond firmly to any act of violence. He also dismissed allegations by Congress leader Sukhjinder Randhawa, saying previous regimes allowed gang networks to thrive.

On the recent bus strike, the Chief Minister said the unrest stems from legacy staffing issues created by earlier governments, adding that efforts are underway to find a solution without disrupting livelihoods.

Mann also rejected comments by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, who accused him of politicising a visit to a deceased athlete’s family. “Offering condolences is not politics,” he said, urging neighbouring leaders to avoid unnecessary remarks.
