Schools across India to remain closed for Diwali, Chhath and Bhai Dooj in October

As October ushers in the festive season, schools across India are set to observe multiple holidays for major festivals such as Diwali, Chhath Puja, and Bhai Dooj. While the exact dates vary by state, most educational institutions will remain closed for several days during the month.
Schools across most states will remain shut from October 18 (Dhanteras) to October 23 (Bhai Dooj), covering a six-day stretch that includes Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
Bihar: With assembly elections scheduled in two phases on November 6 and 11, schools in Bihar will remain closed for Diwali and Chhath Puja, giving students an extended break during the festive and political season.
Karnataka: The Karnataka government has declared school holidays from October 8 to 18, as teachers are participating in the ongoing socioeconomic caste survey. Additional festive holidays include October 20 (Naraka Chaturdashi) and October 22 (Balipadyami, Deepavali).
Rajasthan: Students in Rajasthan will enjoy one of the longest holiday breaks, with schools closed from October 13 to 24 for Diwali celebrations.
Uttar Pradesh: Schools across Uttar Pradesh will remain closed from October 20 to October 23 for Diwali and Bhai Dooj.
West Bengal: In West Bengal, schools will remain shut from October 20 to October 23, covering Kali Puja (October 20), Diwali (October 21), and Bhai Dooj (October 23).
While these dates represent the broad schedule followed by most state education departments, students and parents are advised to confirm the exact holiday calendar with their respective schools or local education authorities, as schedules may differ based on district or institution.
The October holiday period not only offers students a much-needed break but also coincides with India’s busiest festival and travel season, with families expected to use the time for celebrations and visits to hometowns.
