Supreme Court Upholds Closure of Shambhu Border, Urges Dialogue Between Governments and Farmers

The Haryana government had challenged the decision of the Haryana-Punjab High Court to open the Shambhu border in the Supreme Court. The matter was heard on Friday. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta presented the argument on behalf of the Haryana government. While hearing the matter, the court ruled that the Shambhu border will not open now. The situation will remain as it is right now. Along with this, the court appealed to both state governments to take a decision keeping in mind the problems faced by the common people. The next hearing on this matter in the Supreme Court will be held on August 12.
During the hearing, the apex court once again reiterated that the government should talk to the farmers and take the initiative to end this deadlock. The court remarked that people are facing a lot of difficulties due to the closure of the road. The apex court has asked the Punjab and Haryana governments to suggest the names of those who should be included in the committee and talk to the farmers and the government and find a solution to the problem.
The Supreme Court has also suggested the names of experts from various fields in the committee of both the states. The court said that for this, the names of retired judges, university professors, and researchers from farming backgrounds can be considered. If the state governments do not do this, the court will be forced to intervene.
SG Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the Haryana government, argued in the apex court. During this, he said, 'If Punjab wants, it can open the barricade on its side. Because farmers enter from there with tractor-trolleys. Do not force us for this.' On this, the Supreme Court asked the lawyer of the Punjab government, ‘If the barricade is opened, can you talk to the farmers and ensure that they will not come with tractor trolleys?’ It is known that the Shambhu border has been closed since February this year.
