Tesla launches in India with Mumbai showroom: Here’s everything you need to know about models, prices, performance, and more.

Tesla has formally entered the Indian auto industry, with the opening of its first showroom, at Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Tesla will face competition from luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW as well as Indian behemoths like Tata Motors and Mahindra as it gets ready to establish itself in the third-largest auto market in the world.
The showroom, located in the Maker Maxity Mall at BKC, saw a high-profile inauguration on Tuesday, with police presence ensuring smooth proceedings as VIPs arrived. This launch in Mumbai marks Tesla’s first step into India, with a second showroom expected to open in New Delhi by the end of July. To support this expansion, Tesla has ramped up local hiring and secured warehouse space. Deliveries are expected to begin as early as next month, according to Bloomberg.
As of right now, Tesla only intends to sell the Model Y in India. Six Model Ys have already been shipped from Tesla's Shanghai factory to Mumbai, according to Bloomberg. There are two versions of the Model Y available on Tesla's website: Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and Rear-Wheel Drive. The Rear-Wheel Drive model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and has a 500 km range. The Long Range version has a faster 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds and a range of 622 km. Both models have second-generation suspension noise reduction hardware, nine speakers, and a 15.4-inch touchscreen.
Pricing in India is steep, with the Rear-Wheel Drive model priced at ₹60.1 lakh (-$70,000) and the Long Range variant at ₹67.8 lakh (-$79,000). These prices are notably higher than in other countries, largely due to high import duties in India—a key reason Tesla delayed its market entry for so long.
Earlier this week, Tesla’s India-focused X (formerly Twitter) account posted a teaser announcing their arrival with a “Coming soon” message, signaling the start of a new chapter for electric vehicles in India.
