Total Lunar Eclipse Today: Blood Moon to Grace Indian Skies From 3:20 PM

Skygazers and astronomy enthusiasts across India are in for a treat today as a total lunar eclipse — one of the most spectacular celestial events of the year — unfolds overhead. The eclipse will begin at 3:20 PM Indian Standard Time and conclude at 6:47 PM, giving observers over three hours to witness the Moon pass completely through the Earth's shadow.

According to the India Meteorological Department, a total lunar eclipse occurs when the entire Moon moves into the umbral shadow of the Earth — the darkest, most central part of our planet's shadow. As sunlight is filtered through Earth's atmosphere and cast onto the Moon, the lunar surface typically takes on a deep red or orange hue, a phenomenon commonly referred to as a "Blood Moon." This distinguishes a total lunar eclipse from a partial one, where only a portion of the Moon enters the Earth's shadow.

During today's event, the Moon will travel from right to left through Earth's shadow over the course of the eclipse window.

Today's total lunar eclipse is the second major celestial event of 2026. Last month's solar eclipse, while significant, was not visible from Indian territory — making today's lunar eclipse all the more eagerly anticipated by India's astronomical community. No special equipment is required to view a lunar eclipse safely, making it one of the most accessible astronomical events for the general public.

Observers are advised to find an open area with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon for the best viewing experience.
