Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan Honors Centenary of Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj’s Visit to Shravanabelagola

The Vice-President of India, C P Radhakrishnan, on Sunday solemnly marked the centenary of Acharya Shri 108 Shantisagar Maharaj Ji’s historic visit to Shravanabelagola, a revered site of Jain pilgrimage. The event celebrated 100 years since the Jain saint’s participation in the Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony in 1925 and featured the unveiling of a statue honoring his profound legacy.
In his address, Radhakrishnan praised Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj’s vital role in revitalizing the Digambara Jain tradition. He lauded the saint’s embodiment of key Jain principles—Ahimsa (non-violence), Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), and Anekantavada (pluralism)—and reflected on their enduring relevance in today’s fast-paced world. “In an age marked by materialism and restlessness, Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj Ji’s life reminds us that true freedom lies in self-restraint and inner peace, not in possession or indulgence,” he said.
The Vice-President highlighted how the centenary celebrations reignited the spiritual flame at Shravanabelagola, with the newly unveiled statue symbolizing simplicity, purity, and compassion. “I hope his message continues to inspire all Indians to walk the path of righteousness, tolerance, and peace,” he added.
Radhakrishnan also paid tribute to Shravanabelagola’s rich 2,000-year Jain heritage, spotlighting the majestic 57-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali—commissioned by Ganga dynasty minister Chavundaraya—as a timeless emblem of devotion and artistic excellence. He recounted Emperor Chandragupta Maurya’s renunciation at the site under the guidance of Jain saint Acharya Bhadrabahu, symbolizing the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment beyond worldly success.
The Vice-President praised the Government of India’s recognition of Prakrit as a Classical Language and the launch of the Gyan Bharatham Mission, which aims to digitize ancient Jain manuscripts. He emphasized Jainism’s significant contributions to Tamil literature and culture during the Sangam period, citing classics like Silappadikaram.
Further, Radhakrishnan commended Shri Abhinav Charukeerthi Bhattarak Swamiji, head of the Jain Mutt, for continuing Acharya Shantisagar’s legacy through efforts in healthcare, education, and research, including the Prakrit Research Institute.
Expressing confidence in Shravanabelagola’s lasting spiritual significance, the Vice-President said, “It will remain a shining jewel of India’s heritage, inspiring generations to embrace the values of unity, peace, and tolerance.”
The centenary event was attended among others by dignitaries including Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Karnataka Ministers Krishna Byre Gowda and D Sudhakar, Member of Parliament Shreyas M Patel, and revered Jain monks from Shri Kshetra Shravanabelagola Digambar Jain Mahasamsthana Math.
This commemoration not only honored a revered spiritual leader but also highlighted India’s rich cultural tapestry and unwavering commitment to preserving its ancient traditions for future generations.
