Vice-Presidential Election Schedule Announced by Election Commission

The timeline for electing the next Vice President of India, has officially announced by Election Commission, following the resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 22. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar cited health concerns, stating:

"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution."

According to the Election Commission, the Vice-Presidential election will follow this schedule:

Notification issued: August 7, 2025 (Thursday)

Last date for filing nominations: August 21, 2025 (Thursday)

Scrutiny of nominations: August 22, 2025 (Friday)

Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: August 25, 2025 (Monday)

Polling date (if required): September 9, 2025 (Tuesday)

Counting of votes: September 9, 2025 (Tuesday)

The results will be announced on the same day as polling, if voting takes place.

How is the Vice President Elected?

The Vice President is chosen by an electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The election is conducted through a system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.

The Election Commission also confirmed that preparations are complete and the electoral college list has been finalized.

To be eligible for the post of Vice President, a person must:

Be a citizen of India

Be at least 35 years old

Be qualified to be elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha

Additionally, candidates must not hold any office of profit under the central or state governments, or under any local or subordinate authority.
