Who is Rekha Gupta? Know her journey from student politics to the Delhi Chief Minister

Eleven days after the Delhi Assembly election results, the BJP has officially announced its next chief ministerial candidate in the capital. Rekha Gupta will be the next Chief Minister of Delhi. On February 20, she will take oath at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. This is after 26 years when a BJP leader has become the Chief Minister in Delhi.

Meanwhile, speculations were made in political circles about many leaders becoming the Chief Minister. The biggest claim among these was made about the name of Rekha Gupta. In some reports, it is even being said that Rekha Gupta had got the approval of the Sangh and the BJP had also made her its choice for the CM post.

In such a situation, it is important to know who is Rekha Gupta, who has emerged as a potential face for the post of Chief Minister in Delhi.

Who is Rekha Gupta?

Rekha Gupta is an MLA from Delhi's Shalimar Bagh assembly seat. She is currently the general secretary of Delhi BJP and also the national vice-president of BJP's Mahila Morcha.

50-year-old Rekha was born in 1974 in Nandgarh village in Jind district of Haryana. Her father was an officer in the State Bank of India.

Rekha's family shifted to Delhi in 1976. She was just two years old then. She completed her education in Delhi, where she was actively involved in student politics.

Rekha Gupta was married to Manish Gupta in 1998. According to the affidavit given to the Election Commission, Rekha's husband works in a life insurance company. He also has a spare parts business.

Education and Early Political Involvement

Rekha Gupta joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during her childhood. After this, while studying at Delhi University, she was successful in winning the election of secretary in Daulat Ram College. In 1995-96, she contested the Delhi University Students Union elections and became the president. Rekha then completed her LLB.

Political Career

After completing her studies, Rekha Gupta joined the Delhi unit of BJP Yuva Morcha in 2003-04 and held the post of secretary here. After this, from 2004 to 2006, she served as the National Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

• 2004-06: Served as National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

• 2007: Won as a municipal councilor from North Pitampura.

• 2007-09: Chaired the Women and Child Development Committee in the MCD.

• 2009: Became General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha.

• 2010: Inducted into the BJP National Executive.

• 2012: Re-elected as a municipal councilor from Ward-54, North Pitampura.

Assembly Election Journey

Rekha Gupta was fielded from the Shalimar Bagh seat in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections. While in 2015 she was defeated by Vandana Kumari of the Aam Aadmi Party by about 11 thousand votes, in 2020 her defeat margin was close to 3400 votes.

In the 2025 assembly elections, Rekha Gupta defeated Vandana Kumari of Aam Aadmi Party from Shalimar Bagh assembly seat by 29,595 votes. She got 68,200 votes.
