Yak Mela 3.0 Celebrates Brokpa Heritage and Yak Conservation in Tawang

The Yak Mela 3.0 was successfully held today at Pangkangteng Tso (PTSO), Tawang, celebrating the deep cultural and economic ties between the Brokpa nomadic community and their yaks.

The event was inaugurated by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo and Tawang Brigade Commander, Brigadier Bhupal Singh in the presence of Zilla Parishad Chairperson Leki Gombu, Abbot of Jamyang Choekorling Ven Dobley Rinpoche, and other dignitaries.

Organized by the Monyul Society (NGO), in collaboration with the Tawang Brigade of the Indian Army and the District Administration, the mela was supported by Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from yak grazers across the district, who were provided with essential items such as emergency tents, gumboots, solar lights, blankets, and animal feed by the National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang. Cultural performances by local artists and the Indian Army added colour and vibrancy to the celebration.

In her address, DC Namgyal Angmo highlighted the vital role of the yak in sustaining the livelihood of the Brokpa community. She said that the Yak Mela serves as an important platform to promote yak conservation and the preservation of Brokpa heritage through scientific interventions.

The DC also urged departments to explore innovative yak milk products beyond traditional ghee and churpi to meet tourists’ demands and enhance local incomes. Emphasizing cleanliness and responsible tourism, she commended the organisers for successfully hosting the festival for three consecutive years and thanked the Indian Army and supporting partners for their cooperation.

ZPC Leki Gombu spoke about the government’s welfare measures for the Brokpa community and initiatives for yak preservation. Special guest Lhamo Yangchin lauded the organisers for promoting Tawang through its rich Brokpa traditions. She also underscored the importance of preserving the yak and encouraging the Brokpa community to continue their rich cultural heritage.

Earlier, Festival Director Tenzin Jordan, in his welcome address, announced that the Yak Festival will now become an annual calendar event with continued support from Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Guardian Minister of Tawang, Mama Natung.

A message from the Home Minister and Guardian Minister was also read out by Co-Director Tenzin Lhendup during the event.
