YouTuber Samay Raina appears before NCW, submits written apology over controversial remarks

YouTuber and comedian Samay Raina appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday and submitted a written apology for remarks made in his online show India's Got Latent, which were deemed disrespectful to women.
Raina was summoned by the NCW after clips from the show went viral earlier this year, sparking public outrage over comments that were seen as trivialising rape and objectifying women. The commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter, and a case was also registered by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell.
During the hearing, Raina was questioned by NCW Chairperson Vijay Rahatkar regarding the content, emphasising that public figures have an obligation to treat women with respect and sensitivity, particularly when speaking in front of large crowds. Rahatkar encouraged him to advocate for gender equality and awareness by using his position.
According to an official statement, Raina expressed regret for his comments and assured the commission that he would avoid making such statements in the future. He also committed to creating content that upholds women’s dignity and raises awareness about their rights and respect.
Raina acknowledged the NCW’s concerns and guidance and pledged to take a more constructive approach in his future work, officials said.
This was not Raina’s first brush with controversy. He is also one of five social media influencers currently facing legal scrutiny for allegedly mocking people with disabilities, with proceedings underway in the Supreme Court.
His appearance before the NCW came after multiple summonses were issued. He had skipped the initial hearing on February 17, citing travel and security issues. The NCW later rescheduled the hearing to allow him time to return to India.
Following the backlash earlier this year, Raina took down the India's Got Latent series and issued a public apology. He also took a temporary break from social media and live performances before launching an international comedy tour, which he said contributed to the delay in appearing before the panel.
