The Indian Army has procured over 17 lakh service medals for their honoured personnel for for their services to the force so that they need not go and buy it as a proof of the commendation. It was widely welcomed as personnel can now proudly wear the medals given to them officially. The force said: "Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army) has concluded a contract for procurement of a total of 17.27 lakh Service Medals of 17 different types." "The procurement has enabled Indian Army meet all outstanding demands of service medals in respect of soldiers who have served and are serving in the Indian Army." The medals had not been issued since 2008 by the department of medals in the Ministry of Defence that deals with the subject. The new medals procured will take care of the pending numbers and for future more medals will be ordered. While those conferred with gallantry awards had the a medal presented the others who were given awards for their service and other commendations had to make do with a replica on their own.
