DMK Renominates R.D. Sekar in Perambur as Vijay Entry Speculation Heats Up Chennai Electoral Battle

Chennai |The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday released its list of candidates for 164 constituencies ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, signalling a clear intent to hold ground in key urban seats. Among the most closely watched is Perambur in Chennai, where the party has renominated sitting MLA R.D. Sekar, setting up the possibility of a high-voltage electoral battle amid speculation around actor-turned-politician Vijay entering the fray.

Perambur has emerged as a politically sensitive constituency in north Chennai, with the DMK choosing continuity over experimentation. Sekar, who has held the seat through successive electoral cycles—including the 2021 Assembly election and a subsequent bypoll—returns as the party’s face in what is expected to be a tightly contested race.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly election is scheduled for April 23, with the nomination process set to begin on March 30. Political parties have accelerated candidate announcements as part of their early campaign strategy, particularly in constituencies where multi-cornered contests are likely.

In Perambur, the stakes are significantly higher this time. Vijay, whose political ambitions have gained traction following the launch of his outfit Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is widely expected to contest from the constituency, though an official announcement is still awaited. His possible entry has elevated Perambur to a VIP seat, drawing attention across party lines and voter segments.

The DMK’s decision to field Sekar reflects a calibrated strategy—banking on incumbency, organisational strength, and vote consolidation in an urban working-class belt that has traditionally leaned towards the party. In the previous Assembly election, Sekar secured victory with a margin backed by over 1.05 lakh votes, underlining his electoral base.

Meanwhile, the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance has allotted the Perambur seat to the Pattali Makkal Katchi, adding another layer of complexity to the contest. A triangular fight—should Vijay formally enter—could fragment votes and reshape traditional equations in the constituency.

Political observers note that Perambur’s demographic mix, including industrial workers, middle-class voters, and a sizeable youth population, makes it fertile ground for both established parties and emerging political narratives. Vijay’s potential candidacy, in particular, is expected to test the electoral elasticity of urban Tamil Nadu, where personality-driven campaigns are beginning to intersect with conventional party structures.

As campaign momentum builds, Perambur is poised to become one of the defining battlegrounds of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
