DMK Ticket Applications Cross 10,000 at Anna Arivalayam; Madurai Melur Seat in Focus

With the window for seeking party nominations drawing to a close, the crowd outside Anna Arivalayam thickened yet again on Tuesday, as aspirants from across Tamil Nadu queued up to file their applications with the leadership of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Senior party functionaries said the number of applications received over the past week has crossed 10,000, reflecting heightened interest at multiple levels of the organisation. Ministers, former MLAs, district secretaries and youth wing organisers are among those who have either filed applications or mobilised supporters to press their case before the high command.
Madurai district remains one of the most closely watched theatres in this internal exercise. All ten Assembly constituencies in the district have seen multiple applications, with several mid-level functionaries entering the race. The submissions have often been accompanied by supporters, underscoring the competitive undercurrents within local units.
The Melur Assembly constituency has emerged as a focal point. Ilango, Madurai North district organiser of the DMK youth wing, formally staked his claim by submitting his application earlier this week. He was joined by deputy organisers Vaigai Marudhu, Kumaresan and Honest Raj, in what party insiders described as an attempt to signal unity within the youth ranks.
In the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections, Melur was allotted to the Congress under the DMK-led alliance arrangement. However, with negotiations over seat-sharing yet to begin in earnest, there is speculation within party circles that the DMK may consider contesting the seat directly this time. Melur has traditionally been viewed as favourable terrain for the AIADMK, making candidate selection there politically significant.
Sources indicated that the party leadership is expected to begin preliminary scrutiny of applications district-wise later this week, with consultations involving senior office-bearers likely to follow. A final list of candidates is not expected before alliance talks reach a clearer stage.
For now, the steady procession at Anna Arivalayam continues — a visible reminder that beneath the formal calm of party procedure lies an intense contest for political ground.
