Meghalaya MP Dr. Ricky Syngkon Dead at 54

Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon, the Member of Parliament from the Shillong Parliamentary constituency and a prominent leader of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), passed away on Wednesday evening after suffering a massive cardiac arrest while playing futsal at Mawiong. He was 54.

According to sources, Dr. Syngkon collapsed without warning during the game and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Despite emergency medical intervention, he could not be revived. The sudden nature of his passing — mid-game, in apparent good health — has made the shock all the more profound for those who knew him.

Widely regarded as one of Meghalaya's most articulate and effective voices in national politics, Dr. Syngkon had earned a reputation as a fearless parliamentarian who consistently championed the interests of his constituents. His loss leaves a significant void in both the VPP and the broader political landscape of the northeastern state.

His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across Meghalaya, with leaders and well-wishers pouring in condolences. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is expected to formally express his condolences today. In a mark of respect, the Meghalaya Assembly is also likely to defer the tabling of the state budget — a decision expected to be confirmed later in the day.
