PM Narendra Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman as BNP Sweeps Bangladesh Elections After 25 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman on the BNP's landslide victory in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections. PM Modi said this victory symbolizes the people's unwavering trust. He assured that India will continue to support a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh and work closely with the new government for the shared development of both countries.

The results of the 13th general election in Bangladesh mark a major political shift. The BNP is making a strong return to power after nearly 25 years. According to the latest trends, the BNP alliance has captured more than two-thirds of the 300 seats. The BNP alone is leading in 165 seats, while its ally Jamaat-e-Islami is leading in 62 seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman on his victory on the social media platform X. He said that this victory reflects the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in his leadership.

In his message, PM Modi stated that India will stand firmly with a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. He also expressed his desire to advance the multifaceted relationship between the two countries and work together on shared development goals.

Tarique Rahman emerged as the most prominent figure in this election. He won landslide victories in both Bogra-6 and Dhaka-17 constituencies. Meanwhile, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir surprised everyone by winning the Thakurgaon-1 seat by a huge margin of nearly 2.5 lakh votes. After a long rule by the Awami League, the formation of a BNP-led government in Bangladesh is now certain.

Tarique Rahman is the acting president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He is the eldest son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Tarique Rahman was born in the 1960s. He has been involved in BNP politics since its inception and played a key role in the party's organizational structure.

When Khaleda Zia was Prime Minister between 2001 and 2006, Tarique Rahman was considered an influential strategist within the party. During the political turmoil and state of emergency in Bangladesh in 2007, Tarique Rahman was charged with corruption and other crimes. He was later sentenced. He subsequently moved to the UK for treatment and has been living there ever since. During his exile, he has been managing BNP activities from London.

This victory for the BNP is being seen as a sign of a major shift in Bangladeshi politics. India has made it clear that it is ready to work with the new government to further strengthen bilateral relations.
