S A Chandrasekhar speaks out on Vijay’s political circle, warns of ‘dangerous influence’

In Tamil Nadu’s volatile intersection of cinema and politics, a father’s public appeal has added a fresh layer to the debate surrounding actor-politician Vijay and the direction of his political journey. Veteran filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar has broken his silence, speaking with visible anguish about what he describes as a “tight ring” of influence surrounding his son.
The remarks come at a time when the actor, who recently launched the political outfit Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has found himself amid personal and political chatter — from speculation around his family life to questions over his advisers and the structure of the organisation.
In a televised interaction, Chandrasekhar recalled the early years of Vijay’s career, when he said he devoted himself almost entirely to building his son’s path in cinema. For more than a decade, he noted, his energies were spent creating opportunities for the young actor, even after early setbacks.
But his concern today, he said, lies with the circle surrounding Vijay.
According to Chandrasekhar, the actor is being kept within what he described metaphorically as an “iron enclosure”, shielded from uncomfortable truths and from people who once worked closely with him. He alleged that a group functioning behind the scenes has been building its own sphere of influence in the name of the actor.
The director claimed that loyalists who once stood by Vijay are gradually being pushed away, while narratives favourable to a particular group are being relayed to him repeatedly. When misinformation is repeated often enough, he warned, it risks being accepted as fact.
Chandrasekhar’s comments came after earlier statements by Vijay’s former manager, P. T. Selvakumar, who had spoken to reporters about a perceived distance between father and son. Selvakumar had suggested that those who helped shape Vijay’s early career were no longer receiving the respect they once did — remarks that stirred discussion across Tamil media.
Chandrasekhar maintained that the issue is not a personal dispute between father and son. Instead, he described it as a difference in approach to the functioning of Vijay’s movement.
Within the people’s movement linked to the actor’s political ambitions, he alleged, some administrators are forming their own networks and sending selective information upward. As a result, those working sincerely on the ground may not be receiving recognition, while distorted impressions reach the leadership.
Such developments, he cautioned, could affect Vijay’s credibility both in cinema and politics.
For Chandrasekhar, the decision to speak publicly stemmed from concern as a parent. A father, he said, cannot remain silent if he believes his child’s path may be endangered.
He said he had tried more than once to convey these concerns directly to Vijay, but felt the situation had not fully registered with him. That, he explained, is why he chose to speak through the media — hoping the message would eventually reach his son.
Despite the criticism, Chandrasekhar expressed confidence that time would bring clarity. When that moment arrives, he said, the “toxic ring” around Vijay will fall away and the truth will become evident.
For now, the episode highlights the complicated terrain faced by a star navigating the transition from screen icon to political leader — where personal relationships, organisational politics and public scrutiny often intersect.
