Sunetra Pawar to Become Maharashtra's First Woman Deputy Chief Minister

In a historic development in Maharashtra politics, senior NCP leader Sunetra Pawar was unanimously elected as the leader of the NCP legislative party on Saturday, paving the way for her to become the state's first female Deputy Chief Minister.

Sunetra Pawar is scheduled to be sworn in at 5 PM today, filling the post left vacant after her husband Ajit Pawar's tragic death in a plane crash near Baramati on January 28.

Unanimous Election at Legislative Party Meeting

At a joint meeting of NCP legislative party and Legislative Council members held at 2 PM, senior leader Dilip Walse Patil proposed Sunetra Pawar's name. All members present unanimously accepted the proposal.

The decision marks a significant moment in Maharashtra's political history, elevating a woman to the Deputy Chief Minister's position for the first time.

Rajya Sabha Resignation Required

Sunetra Pawar currently serves as a Rajya Sabha MP and will be required to resign from her parliamentary membership before taking the oath of office as Deputy Chief Minister.

Sharad Pawar Distances Family from Decision

NCP chief Sharad Pawar, speaking to media, clarified that the decision was made independently by the party. "Neither I nor my family were aware of this decision. The party will take this decision," he stated.

Pawar also revealed that discussions had been ongoing for the past four months between the two NCP factions, involving Jayant Patil and the late Ajit Pawar.

NCP Reunification Speculation Intensifies

Following Ajit Pawar's untimely demise, speculation about reunification of the two NCP factions has grown stronger. Political observers believe a major decision regarding the party's future may emerge in the coming days.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the Mahayuti alliance will fully support NCP's decision, ensuring continuity of the ruling coalition's functioning.
