Tamil Nadu Polls: Edappadi K. Palaniswami Rejigs AIADMK Strategy, Announces New Campaign Teams

Chennai: With the Tamil Nadu Assembly election scheduled for April 23, the political contest in the state is entering a decisive phase, with both the ruling alliance and the opposition recalibrating their strategies. While the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is attempting to consolidate its position, the opposition alliance led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is grappling with internal challenges and shifting alliances.

Senior AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami is learnt to be reassessing the party’s campaign blueprint after several early political moves failed to generate the momentum the leadership had anticipated. Party sources indicated that Palaniswami recently held consultations with astrologers regarded as close advisers and may recalibrate his electoral strategy in the coming days based on their suggestions.

The upcoming Assembly polls will not only test the strength of the opposition but also the ability of the ruling DMK under Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to retain its political dominance. The DMK has already forged a wide coalition involving more than twenty parties, presenting a formidable alliance structure ahead of the election.

By contrast, the AIADMK has faced difficulties in building a similar coalition framework. Some allies have drifted away while internal dissent within the party has surfaced periodically, complicating the electoral calculations of the opposition camp. Political observers point out that the entry of smaller and emerging regional parties could further fragment the anti-incumbency vote, potentially reshaping the electoral arithmetic.

The challenge before Palaniswami is also organisational. Since the death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in 2016, the AIADMK has struggled to secure a decisive mandate in key elections, leaving the party searching for a stable political narrative and leadership consolidation.

Against this backdrop, the AIADMK leadership has reconstituted several internal committees to streamline campaign operations. A core administrative group headed by Palaniswami now includes senior leaders such as K. P. Munusamy, Dindigul Srinivasan, S. P. Velumani, P. Valarmathi, Venugopal, Justin Selvaraj and Inbathurai.

Another panel comprising Munusamy, Srinivasan, Velumani and Valarmathi has been tasked with conducting seat-sharing negotiations with potential alliance partners. Parallel teams have also been set up to handle campaign coordination, publicity planning and media outreach in the run-up to the election.

Party insiders say the leadership is keen to project organisational unity and sharpen its campaign narrative in the weeks ahead. While consultations with astrologers are not unusual in the country’s political culture, the move underscores the uncertainty within the opposition camp as it prepares for a high-stakes electoral contest.

With polling less than weeks away, both the DMK-led alliance and the AIADMK-led opposition are expected to intensify their campaign efforts across Tamil Nadu, making the election one of the most closely watched political battles in the region this year.
