Tirumangalam Election Battle Intensifies: Can R.B. Udhayakumar Secure Hat-Trick as DMK Deploys Sabareesan Strategy?

Tirumangalam is once again witnessing intense political activity, with the constituency turning into a high-stakes battleground even before formal candidate announcements. The key question dominating the discourse is whether AIADMK’s R.B. Udhayakumar, contesting for the third time, can achieve a hat-trick victory.

Since the 2009 by-election, the DMK has failed to reclaim the Tirumangalam seat. In that election, the constituency drew national attention for setting a controversial precedent involving distribution of gifts and cash to voters. Backed by M.K. Alagiri, DMK candidate Latha Athiyaman had then secured victory. However, in the subsequent three elections, the AIADMK has consistently retained the seat.

R.B. Udhayakumar, a former minister, has emerged victorious twice in a row and is now preparing for his third consecutive contest. Having confirmed his candidature, he has been actively working in the constituency for over a year. His campaign has involved welfare assistance, addressing public grievances, contributing to temple festivals, participating in family events of constituents and party workers, and systematically building booth-level committees to strengthen election preparedness.

This sustained grassroots engagement has placed Udhayakumar in a relatively advantageous position in terms of organisational readiness. Known for his loyalty to former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, he has even constructed a memorial for her at T. Kunnathur, where he is currently stationed to facilitate his election activities.

On the other side, the DMK has fielded Manimaran, son of Sedapatti Muthiah and the party’s suburban south district secretary. Determined to break its long-standing losing streak in Tirumangalam, the DMK leadership has deployed Chief Minister’s son-in-law Sabareesan to directly oversee campaign strategy. He has been actively guiding party functionaries and coordinating election efforts on the ground.

Manimaran, too, has intensified his campaign, adopting methods similar to his opponent, including distribution of gifts and food to voters. Reports suggest that the DMK camp is prepared to go further in ensuring voter outreach and engagement.

In response, Udhayakumar has reportedly urged his party cadre to match and exceed any such efforts by the DMK, maintaining an aggressive campaign posture.

As a result, the Tirumangalam Assembly constituency is already witnessing an election atmosphere reminiscent of a by-election, with heightened activity and competitive mobilisation. Given the intensity of the contest, enforcement measures including checks by officials have been stepped up in and around the constituency. However, AIADMK leaders have alleged that officials are approaching the situation with caution, particularly in dealing with the DMK camp.

With both sides leaving no stone unturned, Tirumangalam is set for a fiercely contested electoral battle.
