Bangladesh Lifts IPL Broadcast Ban, Clears Decks For India Cricket Tour

Bangladesh has reversed its ban on IPL broadcasts, with Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahiruddin Swapan declaring that the new government will not impose any restrictions on channels wishing to telecast the Indian Premier League — a significant diplomatic signal ahead of India's scheduled tour of Bangladesh in September.
The previous Mohammad Yunus-led government had banned IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh following a dispute with the BCCI over the release of fast bowler Mushfiqur Rahman from IPL 2026, and had refused to send the Bangladesh team to India for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 — a decision that led the ICC to replace Bangladesh with Scotland in the tournament. The IPL broadcast ban had shocked cricket fans across the country, given the league's status as the world's most-watched T20 competition.
The new government has drawn a clear line between sport and politics. "We don't want to link sports with politics. If any channel wants to broadcast the IPL, we will view it from a commercial perspective and make a national decision. We won't stop anyone," Minister Swapan said. The Cable Operators Association confirmed the position, with official Reza Ul Kari Mulla Balu stating that no directive to halt IPL telecasts had been received and that Star Sports could broadcast the league freely.
The timing of the reversal has not gone unnoticed. Bangladesh is scheduled to host India for three ODIs and three T20Is in September, but the Indian team's travel remains contingent on central government approval. Diplomatic observers view Bangladesh's changed stance on the IPL as a goodwill gesture designed to restore cricketing relations — even if the government has stopped short of making any explicit linkage.
