India Eyes New Milestones at Asian Games 2026; Over 700 Athletes to Compete in Japan

Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess India's preparations for the Asian Games 2026, to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. With over 700 Indian athletes expected to compete across more than 40 sports disciplines, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive support across every aspect of athlete preparation.

Dr. Mandaviya outlined an all-encompassing support framework for India's contingent, covering training, sports science, logistics, kit provision, food support, and medical care. The Minister emphasised that athletes should be able to focus entirely on performance without administrative or logistical distractions. "Every possible support will be provided so that the athletes can prepare without distractions and deliver their best at the games," he said.

Beyond individual athlete support, Mandaviya stressed the importance of structured coordination among all stakeholders involved in the preparation process. Timely planning and strong institutional support systems, he noted, would be critical in helping India achieve new milestones at what is one of Asia's most prestigious multi-sport events.

India's performance at recent Asian Games has shown a steady upward trajectory, and the government is clearly targeting a stronger medal haul at Aichi-Nagoya.
