India’s T20 World Cup hero Sanju Samson set for grand welcome in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: India’s triumph in the 2026 T20 World Cup has found a special resonance in Kerala, where wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is being celebrated as the state’s newest sporting hero. The Kerala government has announced that a formal reception will be organised in Thiruvananthapuram to honour Samson for his decisive contribution to India’s title-winning campaign.

The announcement came after India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final played in Ahmedabad, sealing the championship in emphatic fashion. Samson, who emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament, was named the Player of the Series, a recognition that capped his remarkable run with the bat.

Kerala’s General Education and Labour Minister V. Sivankutty said the state government would host a special reception in the capital city to celebrate Samson’s achievement. According to the minister, the cricketer’s performances have brought immense pride to the people of Kerala, particularly to residents of Vizhinjam, the coastal locality in Thiruvananthapuram from where Samson hails.

“The state is proud of the way Sanju Samson represented the country and delivered under pressure. His performance has brought honour to Kerala,” Sivankutty said in a statement. The date for the official felicitation programme is expected to be announced soon.

Journey through setbacks

Samson’s path in the tournament, however, was far from straightforward. He was initially left out of the playing XI for the opening matches of the competition. Earlier, during a bilateral series against New Zealand, his modest returns with the bat had resulted in him being sidelined from India’s T20 plans.

But fate intervened when opener Abhishek Sharma was ruled out due to a health issue. The unexpected opening paved the way for Samson to enter the XI, and he seized the opportunity with both hands.

His defining moment arrived during a crucial Super 8 encounter against the West Indies cricket team. Under pressure, Samson produced a composed and unbeaten 97, guiding India to a vital victory and keeping the team firmly in contention in the tournament.

Match-winning performances

Samson’s consistency continued in the knockout stages. In the semi-final against the England cricket team, he scored a commanding 89 that anchored India’s innings and helped secure a place in the final.

In the summit clash against New Zealand, Samson once again rose to the occasion, smashing 89 runs off just 46 balls. His aggressive yet measured innings laid the foundation for India’s dominant win.

Across five matches in the tournament, Samson accumulated 321 runs, making him one of the leading contributors to India’s victorious campaign. His performances earned him the Player of the Series award.

“Feels like a dream”

Speaking after receiving the honour, Samson described India’s World Cup victory as a dream come true. The Kerala cricketer said he struggled to find words to express the emotions of lifting the trophy after years of waiting for consistent opportunities at the international level.

For a player who had often hovered on the fringes of the national side, the tournament proved to be a defining chapter. From being overlooked in the early stages to emerging as the tournament’s most influential player, Samson’s journey has resonated deeply with fans across Kerala.

It is that journey — from setbacks to global success — that the Kerala government now intends to celebrate when the World Cup hero returns home.
