Jadeja Shines as Senior Statesman, Ashwin Reflects on Their Bond

As the Indian Test team undergoes a generational shift, Ravindra Jadeja has emerged as one of the few remaining stalwarts from the previous decade. With several of his contemporaries stepping away from the game, Jadeja has embraced his role as the senior figure, continuing to perform at an elite level. In India's commanding win over the West Indies in their series opener, the all-rounder once again showcased his class—scoring a brilliant century and taking four wickets.

Despite his personal success, Jadeja admitted to missing the presence of Ravichandran Ashwin, his long-time spin partner and a crucial figure in India's bowling attack for years. The duo formed one of the most feared spin pairings in modern Test cricket, and Jadeja's comments about missing Ashwin’s presence from the other end spoke volumes about their bond.

Ashwin, now retired from international cricket, responded with his trademark wit. “The wickets he’s taking now, I would’ve taken two or three of those,” he joked, playfully suggesting that Jadeja was enjoying the benefits of not having to share the spotlight. “He shouldn’t be missing me—that's an advantage he’s got now,” Ashwin laughed.

Yet behind the banter was genuine admiration. Ashwin praised Jadeja’s consistency and growth, especially as he continues to elevate his game well into his 30s. “Really happy for him,” Ashwin said. “The way he is batting, the way he’s becoming a bonafide legend of Test cricket—it’s something special.”

Ashwin also touched on the emotional side of being a senior player in a team filled with fresh faces. He acknowledged the challenges Jadeja may face as the dressing room around him changes. “When we reach that position of super-seniority, it’s not as easy to connect with the new boys the same way. You miss the small conversations,” he shared, referencing how he felt after Cheteshwar Pujara's retirement.

Closing on a warm note, Ashwin promised to reconnect with his old teammate soon. “I know what Jadeja was saying. We’ll meet and talk sometime,” he said, reflecting the camaraderie that defined one of Indian cricket’s most iconic partnerships.
