Delhi rains bring relief from heat but cause widespread waterlogging, disrupt traffic and flights; IMD issues red alert

Heavy overnight rain lashed Delhi and its surrounding areas, bringing much-needed relief from the humidity—but also leaving large parts of the city waterlogged and severely disrupting daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the national capital, warning of more intense weather conditions ahead.
Several key areas across Delhi, including Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, and Connaught Place, reported waterlogging, slowing down traffic and causing major inconvenience for commuters.
Though the Delhi Airport said flight operations were “currently normal,” delays were reported throughout the morning. In a statement posted on X, the airport said:
> “As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, Delhi is experiencing inclement weather conditions. However, all flight operations at Delhi Airport are currently normal. Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free.”
However, data from flight tracking website Flightradar told a different story. As of 8:30 am, 135 flights had been delayed — 15 inbound and 120 outbound flights were running behind schedule.
IndiGo cautioned passengers to leave early due to heavy traffic and possible roadblocks.
> “Due to today’s downpour, several roads across Delhi are currently blocked or experiencing slow movement. Please allow extra time, take an alternate route if possible, and check your flight status on our website or app before leaving for the airport,” the airline said in an advisory on X.
SpiceJet also issued a weather-related warning, saying:
> “Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Delhi (DEL), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via spicejet.com.”
According to the IMD, thunderstorms with rain are likely to continue through the day. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 33°C, with a minimum of 25°C.
While the rain has brought temporary relief from the oppressive heat and humidity, the heavy downpour has also highlighted the capital's ongoing issues with urban flooding and infrastructure strain during the monsoon season.
