Sarfaraz Khan Stakes Asia Cup Claim with Explosive 138 in Buchi Babu Tournament

With just weeks left for the start of the Asia Cup 2025, India’s squad announcement is expected on Tuesday. Ahead of the selection, young middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan has staked his claim with a scintillating knock in the Buchi Babu tournament.
Playing for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu, the 27-year-old right-hander smashed 138 runs off just 114 balls, laced with 10 fours and six sixes, before retiring hurt. Sarfaraz reached his century in just 92 deliveries, underlining his aggressive intent and consistency.
The innings comes at a crucial time, as the selectors weigh their options for the Asia Cup. Sarfaraz, who made his Test debut against England last year, has played six Tests so far, scoring 371 runs in 11 innings with one century and three half-centuries. Despite impressive domestic performances, he was left out of the squad for the recent England tour.
In first-class cricket, Sarfaraz boasts an outstanding record with 4,685 runs in 55 matches at a remarkable average of 65.98, including 16 centuries and 15 half-centuries.
The Asia Cup 2025 will be held from September 9 to 28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Originally scheduled to be hosted in India, the tournament was shifted to a neutral venue following the agreement between India and Pakistan to play only at overseas venues till 2027. Earlier this year, India lifted the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, defeating Pakistan in the final.
Sarfaraz’s timely knock has once again reignited discussions around his inclusion, with many experts believing that his form and hunger make him a strong contender for India’s Asia Cup squad.
