Shubman Gill Dropped as India Names Squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026

The Indian team for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 was announced today (Saturday) in Mumbai. Shubman Gill was not included in the World Cup squad. Axar Patel was named vice-captain in his place. A surprising inclusion came in the form of Ishan Kishan. He has been included in the squad. Sanju Samson has also been included in the squad. This team will also participate in the five-match T20 series against New Zealand starting January 11th before the World Cup.
It should be noted that Ishan Kishan had been out of the Indian T20 team for two years. Recently, under his captaincy, Jharkhand won the domestic T20 tournament, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Ishan scored a century in the final, becoming the first captain to do so. Now, Ishan has been rewarded for this performance. Ishan had scored the most runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 517 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 197. He scored two centuries and two half-centuries.
Jitesh Sharma was also not included in the squad. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have been included as the two wicketkeepers. Shivam Dubey and Hardik Pandya are the fast bowling all-rounders. Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy are the two main spinners. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are also included as the two spin all-rounders. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana are the three fast bowlers in the squad.

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 begins on February 7th. Team India's first match is against the United States. A total of 20 teams are participating in the tournament, divided into four groups. The Indian team is in Group A, which includes India, Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the United States.
India will begin its World Cup campaign against the United States in Mumbai on February 7th. This will be followed by a match against Namibia in Delhi on February 12th, Pakistan in Colombo on February 15th, and the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18th.
