Zimbabwe Qualify for Super 8s After Rain Washout, Australia Eliminated from T20 World Cup

The match between Zimbabwe and Ireland at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday was washed out due to heavy rain. Both teams were awarded one point each, taking Zimbabwe's total in Group B to five points and securing their qualification for the Super 8s.

The result shut the doors for both Ireland and Australia, ending the Kangaroos' campaign in the group stage.

Zimbabwe have remained unbeaten in this World Cup. They defeated Oman in their opening match and then stunned Australia by 23 runs in a thrilling encounter in Colombo.

In the Super 8s, Zimbabwe will be part of Group 1, where they will face heavyweights India, South Africa, and the West Indies. Zimbabwe advanced from Group B alongside Sri Lanka.

This marks a shameful moment in Australian cricket history—the team has been eliminated from the T20 World Cup group stage for the first time since 2009, when they exited after losses to Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

This time, the Kangaroos' performance was equally dismal. Their defeat to Sri Lanka followed by the loss to Zimbabwe ended their hopes of a comeback. Two defeats in three matches eliminated Australia from the tournament.

With Zimbabwe's qualification, the Super 8 Group 1 composition is now clear. Zimbabwe will replace Australia's seeding position (X2).

Super 8 Group 1:

  • India
  • South Africa
  • West Indies
  • Zimbabwe

Given Zimbabwe's current form, the top teams will need to be wary of them. Australia's early exit is a major shock for cricket lovers worldwide.
