News Detail

General Bipin Rawat was the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS). The post of CDS fell vacant after his death in a helicopter crash. Now discussions have started about who will be the next CDS. Although many names are being considered for the post, but the name of Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane is in the forefront. He is retiring in April. Meanwhile, the question is arising in everyone’s mind that what is the process for the appointment of CDS. It is being told below….

The CDS is a four-star military officer, selected from amongst the officers of the Indian Armed Forces. Regarding the appointment of the next CDS, information has been received that the government will form a panel of names of senior commanders of the Army, Air Force and Navy. Based on the recommendations of the three services, this panel will be finalized, which will take two to three days. After this it will be sent to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh for approval. After their approval, these names will be sent to the Cabinet Committee on Appointments for consideration, which will take a final call on the country’s next CDS.

According to experts, the same protocol will be followed for the appointment of CDS, which is prescribed for the appointment of the chiefs of the three services. The appointment of General Naravane as CDS is more likely on the basis of overall performance, including handling of the standoff in Ladakh. Apart from this, he is the senior-most among the three service chiefs.

General Naravane has full potential to become CDS

Army Chief General MM Naravane took over as the Chief of Army Staff on December 31, 2019 and is due to retire in April next year. At the same time, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Choudhary in September this year, while the Chief of the Navy, Admiral R. Hari Kumar took over in November. At the same time, an influential section of military planners have been of the view that the CDS should be from the Army, at least until the process of building theater commands under ambitious defense reforms is complete.
