Austrian Economist’s X Account Withheld in India After Call to ‘Dismantle’ Nation

The Government of India has blocked access to the X (formerly Twitter) account of Austrian economist Gunther Fehlinger-Jahn following a controversial post in which he called for the "dismantling of India."

The action was taken on Friday after the Ministries of Home Affairs and Electronics & Information Technology flagged the post as highly provocative and directed the Elon Musk-owned platform to restrict access to the account within India.

In his post, Fehlinger-Jahn wrote:

"I call to dismantle India into ExIndia. @narendramodi is Russia's man. We need friends of freedom for @KhalistanNet."

The statement sparked widespread outrage online, especially as it was posted shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin during the SCO Summit in Tianjin. The two leaders held a bilateral meeting and were even seen sharing a car ride to the venue, highlighting their diplomatic rapport.

Adding to the controversy, Fehlinger-Jahn shared a map that depicted nearly all Indian territories as parts of Pakistan, Khalistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The post quickly went viral, drawing criticism from users across the political spectrum. Many labelled him a "troll" attempting to provoke division.

Responding to the controversy, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the remarks, calling them “insanity,” and urged the Ministry of External Affairs to take the matter up with the Austrian Embassy.

“What insanity is this? @MEAIndia must take this up with the Austrian Embassy,” she wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the same summit, made remarks emphasizing the need for a multipolar world order.

“A unipolar world is unfair... all actors in international relations must be equal,” he said, warning against the creation of new global “hegemons.”

The government’s move to block Fehlinger-Jahn’s account comes amid growing concerns over foreign interference and inflammatory content on social media platforms.
