Bangladesh Court Sentences Exiled Hasina to 10 Years in Land Corruption Cases

A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in two separate corruption cases related to irregularities in allocating land under a government housing project on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Dhaka's Special Judge's Court found the 79-year-old guilty of using official influence to allocate residential plots under the Rajuk New Town Project in Purbachol to others, including her niece, UK Labour MP Tulip Siddiq.

Judge Robiul Alam simultaneously sentenced Hasina's relatives to varying prison terms. Siddiq's younger sister Azaman Siddiq and brother Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby received seven years of rigorous imprisonment each.

All sentences were handed down in absentia, with only one of 16 accused—senior Rajuk official Khurshid Alam—present in court. Other accused, including a former junior housing minister, former ministry secretary, and former Rajuk chairman, received five-year sentences.

"The trial of the accused was not obstructed regardless of where they were in the world," the judge stated.

Hasina's disbanded Awami League labelled the sentences "entirely predictable" and "false cases" staged by Muhammad Yunus's interim government.

UK MP Siddiq called the process "flawed and farcical from beginning to end," telling the BBC she had received no summons, charge sheet, or correspondence from Bangladeshi authorities despite being a sitting parliamentarian.

The conviction adds to Hasina's growing legal woes since her government was toppled in the student-led July Uprising on August 5, 2024. A special tribunal previously sentenced her to death for crimes against humanity, while a November court handed her 21 years imprisonment in a separate corruption case.

Hasina remains in exile in India as Bangladesh's interim government continues pursuing wide-ranging cases against her and associates.
