BNP Sweeps Bangladesh Election with Two-Thirds Majority, Set to Form Government

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is set to form the next government after sweeping the 13th national parliamentary election and crossing the two-thirds majority mark. The party and its allies are leading in 208 of the 284 constituencies declared so far, signaling a decisive mandate after nearly two decades out of power.

Party Chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul have won their respective seats along with several senior leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman on the electoral victory.

"The victory reflects the trust of the Bangladeshi people in his leadership," PM Modi said, reaffirming India's support for a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.

The congratulatory message signals India's readiness to engage with the incoming BNP government despite recent tensions between the two countries.

Parliamentary election + Referendum

The Election Commission confirmed that the twin polls—parliamentary election and simultaneous referendum—were held peacefully across 299 constituencies.

Counting of votes for the remaining seats as well as the referendum is currently in progress, according to EC officials.

The victory marks BNP's return to power after nearly 20 years, following the August 2024 protests that ousted Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is expected to become Bangladesh's next Prime Minister.
