Former Nepal PM’s wife dies from burns after protesters torch their home

Former Nepal Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal’s wife, Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, tragically died after suffering severe injuries when their home in Dallu was set on fire during ongoing unrest in the country.
According to local reports from Khabar Hub, family members said Chitrakar was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital in critical condition but sadly couldn’t survive her injuries.
This attack happened as protests led mainly by Nepal’s Gen Z continued for a second day, despite the government lifting its ban on social media platforms. The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the dissolution of the government. The protests turned deadly again, with two more people killed, bringing the death toll to 22 and leaving over 300 injured.
Amid the chaos, several key government buildings and political landmarks were attacked. Mobs set fire to Singh Durbar, the main administrative complex in Kathmandu, and Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence. The homes of President Ram Chandra Paudel, Prime Minister Oli, and former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sher Bahadur Deuba were also torched.
During the attack on Deuba’s residence, he and his wife, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were reportedly assaulted. Offices of various political parties have also been targeted as the unrest continues to escalate.
